Human Brain Project

24-11-2023

The largest mapping program of the human brain is completed with impressive results.

After its decade-long journey, one of the largest research programs in the European Union, the iconic Human Brain Project, is concluding, leaving significant progress in the scientific research of the human brain as its legacy. From 2013 to 2023, with funding of 607 million euros, the HBP completed, among other achievements, globally pioneering three-dimensional atlases of the brain. It made a significant contribution to neuroscience and personalized medicine related to the brain. The project developed over 160 digital tools, including Artificial Intelligence applications inspired by the structure and function of the human brain, and presented over 3,000 academic publications.

The most significant contribution of the HBP is undoubtedly the pioneering open European Research Infrastructure, EBRAINS, which gathers a vast amount of data and tools to assist European researchers in addressing significant challenges in brain health. They leverage the knowledge gained from the HBP in the fields of Data Science, brain organization, and Artificial Intelligence. The Athena Research Center, as a partner of the HBP, had the pleasure of organizing the Human Brain Project Summit & Open Day in Athens in February 2020, with the participation of over 750 scientists from across Europe.
