The Robot Perception and Interaction Unit of the Athena Research and Innovation Center (Athena RC) was founded in 2009. It is a research unit with horizontal and multifaceted action for information processing and modeling. Its goals are to advance and sustain basic research in both theoretical and application problems whose fundamentals lie in the intersection of various fields of applied sciences and technology such as robotics, informatics, communications, and cognitive systems. Emphasis is given on theoretical and algorithmic problems as well as novel multidisciplinary applications, including techniques of robot perception & interaction, computer vision, signal processing, speech communication, machine learning, and cognitive modeling of information from humans and computers.

Areas of Research Activities include the following:

  • Robot Perception and Interaction

  • Computer Vision and Image/Video Processing.

  • Multichannel and Multimodal Audio, Speech and Language Processing.

  • Audio-Visual information processing as well as cue-integration and fusion of other multimedia streams that are produced and utilized in multimodal (audio, video, text, graphics, tactile) human-robot interaction.

  • Multimodal Digital Assistants and Interfaces.

  • Nonlinear systems, and Probabilistic Graphical models for Detection, Estimation, Inference.

  • Cognitive systems for Perception, Action, Learning. Modeling of information processing in the Brain.

  • Other Applications areas: Biomedical data;  Remote Sensing data.
