Mythical Journeys in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace

Publication Based on Mythotopia

28-02-2024

Athena Research Center proudly announces the release of “Mythical Journeys in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace”, a bilingual (Greek & English) book. The book is published by the Region of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace  and was inspired by Mythotopia, a platform developed by the Institute for Language and Speech Processing of the Athena Research Center, and the Department of Greek Philology of the Democritus University of Thrace.

The publication presents the most notable ancient myths and more recent legends associated with the landscape of the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, seen from the perspective of thematic mythological routes, which connect specific places in the Region with narratives.

In each thematic route, the brief description is accompanied by primary references to these myths from various texts of ancient Greek and Latin sources,  various works of art from Greco-Roman antiquity depicting characteristic episodes of these myths and an indicative bibliography which allows the non-specialist reader to delve into all myths.

The aim of the book is to fill a gap and provide the modern visitor of the region with valid scientific content related to text and descriptions of the myths, their depictions in works of art, but also their connections with ancient and modern places and place names. This way, the scientific team who prepared the volume attempts to offer part of their work as a small contribution to the local community and the development of the tourism in the region.
