VLDB is a premier annual international forum for data management and database researchers, vendors, practitioners, application developers, and users.

The 49th International Conference on Very Large Data Bases, VLDB 2023 took place in Vancouver Canada, August 28 to September 1, 2023.

2023 has been a remarkable year for the Athena Research Center and Information Management Systems Institute (IMSI) at VLDB in many ways.

Georgia Koutrika, Research Director (IMSI) and an elected member of the VLDB endowment's board of trustees, has been the VLDB 2023 PC Chair and PVLDB Vol16 co-Editor-in-Chief. The last 2 years, she worked with a team of over 400 people to put together the conference program, comprising research and industrial talks, tutorials, demonstrations, keynotes, and workshops covering issues in data management, database and information systems research. Several IMSI members have served at the editorial board: Alkis Simitsis, Research Director (IMSI), has served as Associated Editor, while Theodore Dalamagkas, Research Director (IMSI), George Papastefanatos, Principal Researcher (IMSI), and Dimitrios Skoutas, Principal Researcher (IMSI) have served as PC Members.

Athena Research Center and IMSI delivered several presentations at the conference.

Two research papers, co-authored by Dimitrios Skoutas:

Two well-attended tutorials in the conference by IMSI members:

(1) Efficient Execution of User-Defined Functions in SQL Queries. Alkis Simitsis (Athena Research Center); Yannis E Foufoulas (University of Athens)

(2) Natural Language Interfaces for Databases with Deep Learning. George Katsogiannis-Meimarakis (Athena Research Center); Mike Xydas (Athena Research Center); Georgia Koutrika (Athena Research Center)

Keynote talk:

Georgia Koutrika gave a keynote at the Symposium on Data Markets (SDM) on "Data Discoverability: The Promise of a Data Market".

Award:

Alkis Simitsis has been awarded a VLDB 2023 Distinguished Associate Editor Award.
