About Research and Innovation Centre “Athena”

The Research and Innovation Centre in Information, Communication and Knowledge Technologies ("Athena") is a research and technology body, which was founded under the auspices of the Ministry of Development in 2001.

The objectives of the RC Athena are:

• The promotion of innovative information and communication technologies in the industrial and in the services sector.
• The development of scientific and technological research and its implementation and exploitation of results in the sectors of information technology, knowledge, communication and automating production processes aiming at the production of laboratory prototype products and services
• The creation of development activities in the same sectors and in their applications
• Lifelong learning and training in the respective sectors
• The management of financing programmes supporting businesses that act in its sector and promote state research and technology policies

For the achievement of these goals RC “Athena”:

• Develops innovative approaches for Information and Communication technologies (ICT) in the form of laboratory and industrial prototypes and cooperates with companies for the commercial exploitation of the prototypes
• Customizes technologies for the needs of companies as well as for public services; it observes and studies the ICT developments and penetration into the private and public sector
• Suggests solutions, which combine various ICTs and lead to new approaches and services for the benefit of companies, organizations and other users
• Specifies the conditions for the development of products and services with ICTs by creating the infrastructure, the hardware, the software and the information content in electronic format etc
• Specializes and trains scientists and technicians in the aforementioned fields by organising and funding research projects, postgraduate seminars, publications, seminars and conference
• Provides special technical services, undertakes technical and economical studies, feasibility studies in the aforementioned areas, so that commercial exploitation of the results is ensured
• Cooperates under various frameworks with Universities and Technical Universities, research institutes and companies or participates in Scientific Committees, consortia etc. It is also eligible to found or to co-found companies which share the same goals as “Athena”.

Athena RC is comprised of the following Institutes:

• Institute for Language and Speech Processing – ILSP (Director: prof. V.Mertzios)
• Cultural and Educational Technology Institute – CETI (Director: prof. C.Chamzas)
• Industrial Systems Institute – ISI (Director: prof. D.Serpanos)
• Institute for Research on Networking Technologies – IRNET (Acting Director : prof. P.Tsanakas)
• Institute for the Management of Information Systems – IMIS (Director: T.Sellis)

Three new units have been recently established under RC “Athena”:

• Hellenic Technology Cluster Initiative – Corallia (Scientific Coordinator: prof. V.Makios)
• Space Programmes Unit – SPU (Scientific Coordinator: prof. E.Sarris)
• Information Analysis and Modeling Unit– IAMU ( Coordinator: prof. P.Maragos)
