Perceptually informed organization of textural sounds
Thomas Grill 

 

Summary: This talk presents research on practice-motivated organization of digital sounds, with respect to characterization, modeling and visualization. Central is the orientation of those techniques on human perception. The focus is on textural sounds which play an important role in electroacoustic composition, or any form of sound-based music.

Three main questions are covered:

- Which characteristics of textural sounds are relevant for their description and distinction?

- How can these characteristic properties be measured?

- How can textural sounds (resp. collections thereof) be visually represented?

A prototype sound browser is demonstrated as a typical use case. Intuitive interfaces for the access to sound collections based on the presented research can contribute substantially to novel electronic music instruments or composition tools.

 

Short CV: Thomas Grill is a composer and performer of electroacoustic music, media artist, technologist and researcher of sound.

His artistic works range from intermedia installations to instrumental composition and improvisation, to purely acousmatic music.

Having acquired a PhD in Composition and Music Theory at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, Austria, he now works at the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Vienna where he explores the domain of Sound and Music Computing.
